Well, it helps to add a bit of a flare instead of just a plane 6sided box.

He used a blender model modifier called "Sub surf" it helps create a more realistic look to a bland object, but I recommend that it isn't used unless you have verts to spare.

Make sure you're being low polly with the models. Get a picture of an item or weapon that you would like to model, lay it on the screen in blender, create parts of the gun separately to avoid a "card board" look. Use a 6 sided cylinder for barrels.
